These sorts of robotic vehicles with guns are near gimmick in nature and are basically a dolled up mechanical mule from the Vietnam era. They will die off as quick as they have been dreamed up. Mark my word, they will be replaced by larger vehicles that can carry more than a .50 and ammo. Next it will be a vehicle that can carry personnel as well, until voila you have a full blown jeep or MRAP. The 82nd ABN has now begun issuing about three different designs of multi-passenger ATVs. Funny, it's almost like they wish they had the old M151 Jeeps? Sort of like we re-learn every lesson on mobility and firepower every decade or two.
I think the surveillance drones are most useful things in the video. Until the bigger ones can go fully autonomous they really only served the role of a gun truck. only advantage is they are manned by one man opposed to a driver, gunner and TC. Remember lots of these things are just being tested, and most likely will never see deployment. But the information will hopefully lead to better things.Being a former paratrooper I would think I would have enjoyed having some thing to drive to the objective instead of walking but I am guessing they dropped the M151 for a reason. Most likely because the Humvee was replacing every thing, so it just made more since money wise. But as you pointed out, it was at the coast of mobility. Hell they are up arming the Stryker's with 30mm auto cannons and Javelins. Guess they found that they where lacking the fires part of "fire and maneuver".
Ok, i can see that the gun tracks are pretty impractical, but i still really want one."I said, get....off...my...lawn"
When has practical got in the way of cool. :D
