For awhile, my historical meanderings led me to study the siege of Dien Bien Phu. I had to give it up after three books as entirely too depressing.Such bravery thrown away by such repugnant, self involved leaders. ...and the paratroopers just kept jumping in for their brothers. It's heartbreaking.
Yes, Dien Bien Phu was where the romance of the Imperial era and modern warfare meet. Whole Indochina conflict is interesting to me. As is the war in Algeria and the Suez crises. Last gasp of the pre 20th century Empires.
