Some Fictional Ultra Modern East German Volksarmee 28mm

My Idea to use some M56 helmets to make a modern East German Rump state is coming along. /figs are Empress Modern Russian Federation with a universal head set Fast helmet cut with cut down sides to fit the M56 helmet.
And a Underfire miniatures 1970/80s NVA. Both are 28mm

I am still working on my original East German NVA platoon is coming along. But I been side tracked the past few weeks with family coming from out of town and a camping trip with the wife.

I wasn't able to get much hobby work done this weekend. But I am still being more productive hobby wise then I have been in along time so no complaint.
So here is a Warlord Games Wrecked House. I believe it was originally a 1/72 kit from Italeri, but seems to work just fine with 28mm.

Now its time to prime it and put it in line to be painted.

DDR testing paint jobs.

Well for painting I am currently at using Vallejo Green Grey for the uniform with GW Agrex wash for a table top quality look. Also using VA bronze Green for uncovered helmet and web gear. I tried to do the rain pattern lines and it was ether to light to be seen, or just turned into blotches, so applying KISS to it.
These are all test photos, They still need a lot of work and I believe the last 2 were painted up with German Beige instead of Green Grey. Derp!

Starting a DDR NVA project.

As the title and photo above show, I am doing a DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik) project.

I think I am off to a good start kit wise.

Finally going to use these BTR60s, got 3 of them to build.

Not going to lie, I did skipped a nation size rolls here, but every thing else rolled out the way it did.

Nation size Small 1-5 million

Resources. Cheap Labor and Luxury Goods which helps because they have massive industry!

Urban. 4 40% of the population lives in the towns and cities, rest in shacks, slums and nice farming communities.

Tech 2004 But they still have cell phones and TV's! Who needs clean drinking water?

Industry 9 Plentiful Heavy industry! I guess they make the cellphones.

Government Type. Charismatic Strong Man.... Long live El Jefa!

Government Legitimacy. 10! Everybody loves El Jefa!

Government Popularity. 7 70% think El Jefa is the Boss! And love his Poetry and guitar solos! The don't other 40% don't like music so don't count!

Religious. Fallows Major Religion not common in region. May the Buddha Smile on us all, a large South East Asian population was brought to the

islands in the 19th century and they brought their religion with them. Many Atlánticons Adopted it as their own.

Corruption. Corruption is unusual. Like most Super Hero's El Jefa fights crime and any one else that will keep him from his taxes.

Cultural Coherency. 6 imperfect, some times the different ethos and social groups of Atlántico will get jealous of each other, but El Jefa is about love and unity. So they learn to keep it to themselves, or El Jefa will hear about it.

Allegiances. 9 Patron State...….. El Jafe and the people of Atlántico embrace the people of Redforia and believe we have much to learn from the Circle Trigon Party!

Military doctrine. Light mobile Troops, got to stay light in the heat and move fast.

Airforce doctrine. Air Superiority! Moderately maintained newest airframe is from the year 1990.

Again I used the Not Just a Brush War book to roll this country up. I will keep it simple this time instead of going over the rolls. And in case you were wondering, I rolled this all up and decided to apply it to my "Bad Guy" nation Redforia.

Population Large nation, Population between 20-50 million

NATIONAL RESOURCES Cheap Labor, Precious Metals, and oil or other fuels.

URBANIZATIO Largely Urban with 90% of the population living in some kind of urban center.

TECHNOLOGICAL STANDARD Rolled up 4 years behind the west.

HEAVY INDUSTRY rolled a 10 extensive heavy industry.

POLITICAL SYSTEM Rolled 63 One party state.

GOVERNMENT LEGITIMACY rolled 7 for 70% of the population, which is understandable in such a big country.

GOVERNMENT POPULARITY a 7 again. 70% Sees the truth! And understands all the party does for its people.

RELIGIOUS STANDING Rolled a 1 so dominant religion in region. Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim and other European region religions.

RULE OF LAW -7 Corruption is accepted but infrequent. As long as the Party gets its cut, its all good.

CULTURAL COHERENCE 7 Moderate coherency and I seem to roll a lot of sevens with that dice.

ALLEGIANCES rolled 7 and 8 "Super Power" and Religious or political ally. One party rule and Dictator ran countries of the world unit!

PRESSING CONCERNS Unfree press. So control over media and the internet. The party is watching and protecting you from the outside world!
Wide spread drug use. Many use drugs or Alcohol as an escape from the pressures of the world. Weather this is state sanctioned or not is another thing I have to decide on.
Economic stagnation. Oil while lucrative does not bring in as much as it used to, same with Precious metals. As for cheap labor you can only bring in so much saleing items meant for the Dollar store.

And now time for the military.
TACTICAL DOCTRIN Combined Arms, Cool but Since they are militarist I will be rolling a few times on the elite unit section.
AIR FORCE rolled an 8 Air mobility. So focus is one getting ground units to where they need to be. and rolled an 8 so its Moderately funded and after adding the modifiers, it is only 6 years behind the west or its newest air frame is at least 6 years old.

ARMOURED FORCES
Infantry Support rolled a 6 for limited replacement or fixing equipment.
Main Battle Tanks rolled a 7 for moderate replacement or fixing equipment.
Both are rolled to be age and got about 2005. These dudes are going to be a nasty surprise to the Zubrowkian n Police-Militias when they come rolling across the boarder.

ELITE UNIT
Large Nations can roll two times and becase I can, I rolled 3. Muhahahah

Paratroopers. Parasutisto fuziliero korpuso! "Parachute Rifleman Corps" Best, and loyalist troops go here. Also the Special Forces branch.

Milita". Armed with the newest T-90s and BMP-3. Rest have to make do with local produced T-72s and BTRs

Renowned Armed Regiment. 3rd Tanko Sturmi Brigado! "3rd Armored Attack Brigade" The Elite of the Regular army or Popolo Milita "The Peoples Militia"

Paramilitary. Sturmi Gvardio "Storm Guards" The mailed Fist of the Secret police, Terrorists, dissidents and any thing else that threatens the Party are their target. They are comprised of one Special forces Battalion, a riot control Brigade, a field Brigade(Mechanized) and control costume and provide border control duties. They also maintain a presence in every military unit down to the company level.

SOURCE OF WEAPONS
Russia Federation/Soviet Union. And France apparently. Should make for an interesting mix. Not excluding the stuff they make and supply themselves with such a heavy industry level.

LEVEL OF SUPPORT
Rolled a 7 Reasonable support. So there is a good chance that if they want or need some thing extra, including replacements. They stand a pretty good chance of getting it.

TRAINING LEVEL
rolled an 8 but since it was higher then the rule of law for this nation, it was knocked down one to a 7, "Acceptable training but lacking practical experience". So the troops get decent over all training, but mostly in the no one has been to combat recently and their might be a more then a few days wasted doing propaganda photo shoots then on the range. So Keeping the Force as mostly Regular, or average troop types with the veteran level retained for the PFK Kommandos and Elite for the Special force Battalion.
Zubrowka's Landwehr might have a slight quality edge.

MORALE LEVEL
17 Determined so over all the average Redforian Fusilier of the Peoples Militia is willing to fight, and maybe even go beyond if the reasoning is good. But when compared to the "19" Dedicated Zubrowka Landwehr... Looks like the Kommissars of the political department need to step up their game to motivate the troops.

It provides and easy to roll systems using D10's and D20's to figure out ever thing from a random population size to military strengths and weaknesses.

To give an example, I decided to look over my old image-nation the Republic of Zubrowka, and decided to give it a few rolls of the dice.

First you roll for population size. I got a 7 which means moderate size Between 5 and 20 million citizens. a little bigger then I imagied Zubrowka being so I will lead it to being on the smaller size, maybe 5-8 million. But good to know that I could make it bigger if need be.

2nd you roll up your nations resources, large nations roll 3 times, Massive roll 4 dice but ever one else roles two times. Zubrowka got a 3 and a 5.So this moderately sized nations major resources are Tourism and Precious metals.

So the Zubrowka Riviera and high lands are a good money maker for this country. Along large deposits of precise metals, I guess that means they are known for making jewelry and have more then a few tech companies on call for the conductivity of said materials.
Oh and yes Mendl's pastries are still a popular delight for visitors and exports.

Next you rule to see how urban the population is. Urbanization also gives a rough assessment to the tech level and infrastructure of this nation. I got a 6 for some what Urban. So some what Urbanized. So a few highways, but many towns in the hinterland might still only be connected by one lain roads and old trains.

4th is tech level. You roll 3 D10s and then minus your urbanization roll. I got a 16 so the average civilian tech level is 10 years behind say western Europe. So don't expect free wifi and you might not get good or any cell service once you leave the major population centers.

Next is industry level, since this is for wargaming its nice to know if your country can produce its on materials if need be. I rolled a 8 so moderate Heavy industry. So we might not be producing hoards of Gen 5 fighters and main battle tanks, but we can handle light armored vehicles and make are own small arms. Also means that many of things from the cloths on peoples backs to building materials are most likely locally made.

6th is government type. No fancy rerolling on my part, but got a 2. Which means that Zubrowka is a Constitutional Monarchy. So the Zero Family still are heads of state with the Parliament and Prime minister running every thing. Guess that means even more Tourist bucks to go see the Royal family and their different residencies.

7th Government Legitimacy, to measure how much the population see's the government as authentic and consistent with national tradition.
I got 9. Very legitimate, so something like 90% of the population may not always be happy. But like the way the nation and believe having a King is just the way things are done, so why change it?
8th Government Popularity. Popularity measures how well liked the specific government, So say folks may like the King but how well do they like the Parliament. Got a 8 very popular. So the Center Left collation government is liked by 80% of the polled population. Good happy little country.

9th Religion. rolled a 1 "Fallows dominate religion of the region". So the whole population might not be Catholic, but they out number the protestants, Jews, agnostics...etc.

10th level of corruption "Note that this is a measure of general societal corruption, not specifically government corruption though examples are often set at the top". Rolled a 6 Corruption is accepted but infrequent. So a small bribe to get out of a heavy traffic fine or a favor to help get a building permeant is accepted, but not a frequent as in grandpas days and large open displays will get you in hot water.

11th Cultural Coherence. Coherence measures how consistent the culture is. A culture with significant tension between classes, ethnic or religious groups, a large urban/rural divide or other, similar, challenges will have lower coherence than a more homogeneous society.
I rolled a 8 (moderate Coherence)So small differences in regions, and between different political factions are noted, but still most folks put Zubrowka first.

12th Allegiances. These nations are not super powers so have to have ally's or be subordinate to some other nation or coalition. I rolled a 3 Nation in remote location. So I read that as its ally was some place further away and not a super power. So I went with the U.K. being its ally. While a Great nation on the world stage, the UKs power projection is not as great as it once was, and they are busy with many other things around the world at the moment.

Have a super power as your backer give you many advantages when it comes to acquiring equipment and other things in the diplomacy/war phases.

13th PRESSING CONCERNS, This represents issues that challenges the nations success and since I didn't roll a 3 or below on Legitimacy, Popularity, Rule of law or Coherence. I get to roll to see what 3 major issues are at the head of new hour.
16 Organized crime (I guess that looking the other way is leading to other problems)
80 Cronyism (Oh dear, the seems some PMs might be in for some time in the slammer)
37 Dissident groups (Guess we should take the May 5th Revolutionary guard People rights storm assault column and Zubrowka Rights Party a little more serious)

14th TACTICAL DOCTRINE This serves to determine the broad approach and attitude of the armed force. For gaming purposes, this can be viewed as the emphasis at the “sharp end.
I rolled 10 Lightning war which means I get to roll 2 times one the elite formations chart.

15th Airforce Focus, Air Superiority and then roll at how well we are at meeting this goal and got Extensive. So We are really good at meeting that goal. You then roll to D10s to determent how old your air force tech is, and I got a 9. So are Airforce is very well equipped but its newest Air Frame is at least 19 years old. I am leaning to a few squadrons of Saab JAS 39 Gripen and maybe old RAF Tornado's.

16th ARMOURED FORCE Time to roll to see what are armored forces main arms focus is. Roll 2 D10. I got 2 Light tanks and 4 Infantry support and then rolled moderate on both for equipment status. Means I will have to roll at least a 7 to get replacements for them. I rolled a 10 so are vehicles are at least 20 years out of date. I might only roll 2D ten considering this nation is in Europe and is not completely poor. But I will wait on that. Also need to find some light tanks for them. Who makes light tanks still?

17th ELITE UNITs
Since Zubrowka is a moderately sized nation they only get to roll once. But since I got Lighting war it means I get two elites.
Rolled a 6 for Para militaries (Zubrowka National Police-Militia think military police with IFVs, a Tank Battalion, Airmobile/Parachute Battalion, Amphibious squadron and counter terrorist units)
And a 5 for a Renowned regiment of the armored forces. the Famous Zig-Zagger Royal cavalry Regiment.

19th is to roll for source of weapons but since I sided with the UK figured I would stick with that and not bother to roll.

20th Level of support, this is for before battle rolls to see how often a unit will have access to more equipment then their regular TO&E or even to get replacements. Rolled 6 for moderate. Meaning I would need to roll 6 or below to get that stuff.

21st TRAINING LEVEL I got a 10 reduced to 9 because of my rule of law rating Still very night level of training with a small professional force.

MORALE LEVEL, Rolled a 19, so the Army is Dedicated. So very Patriotic in their love for Zubrowka, The Royal Family and to each other.

Cascadia and big life update.

First off life changes.
I have been with my Girl Friend for almost 4 years now. We have been good friends sense the spring of 2002 where we met on a church group spring break trip to Greece.(both are parents worked for the US military in some capacity and we lived in Germany so its not as extravagant a trip as it may sound.)
I was a boy scout raised in a close modern approximation to Mayberry in eastern Washington state. While she was a punk with a purple Mohawk and smoked from Arizona. So we became fast friends, While ditching bible study to hang on the beach and eat seafood.
We stayed in touch over the years with a few e-mails, letters, a phone call or two and the odd visit. Tell Finally I got over the distance thing and we started dating. And I have been hard pressed to find a better time in my adult life, so last year I popped the question in a very unromantic way over dinner. She asked if I was sure, and then we both said yes.
So as of Tuesday April 17th we will both be shackled in the chains of marriage. And I couldn't be happier.

Now onto my Cascadia modern Imagination thing.

After a recent meeting with the Cascadian Military Department, learned that a earlier report on the structure of are Defense forces needs to be updated.
California decided not to fallow threw on the sale of the Zumwalt class destroy and Ticonderoga class cruiser do to increased activities of the Chinese Navy in the Taiwan straits. (See..PLA Navy Maneuvers off Penghu islands)
The littoral combat ship's are known as Frigates. And their are feelers out for more to increase the fleet from 4 to 10 ships. In the mean time the 3 Arleigh Burke destroyers in dock are being fitted and manned to join the two already in active service.
The rest of the Submarine fleet, Coast Guard and surface fleet remains as previously reported.
The Maritime Defense force land component consists of 2 Marine Commandos, a Navy Arms Men Brigade, (ship and station security) and a Navy Special warfare Diver Squadron.

The Cascadian Air Defense Corp corrections are this. There are only 2 C-17 Wings and 2 Kc-135 wings. But both c-17 and Kc-135 are losing a wing to be sold or used as parts for the remaining Wings. Bringing them down to once Wing each.
And the F-18 Hornet Fighter wing is being sold to Canada. To be replaced with modern Air Drones.

The Cascadian Defense Forces ground components have been restructured to 4 wings. The Reserve Division is made of comprised of all the One Independent infantry Battalion, One Independent Reserve Artillery Regiment, and three Reserve Battalions who are the 3rd battalion of the Active Defense Brigades.

Active Division is comprised of Defense Brigades and its support assists. The First Brigade is a Heavy Brigade comprised of 2 Heavy combined Battalions and a reserve Stryker battalion. the 2nd is a Mechanized Brigade comprised of one combined heavy Battalion. One active and one reserve Stryker Battalion. And the 3rd Mounted Rifle Brigade (Stryker) comprised of 2 active and one reserve battalion.

The Logistics Corp which hold all the medical, training, supply..etc.

And finally there is Reaction Force (Airborne/Air Assault).
Is comprised of the Ranger Corp.

Comprised of the Ranger Reconnaissance Operation Commando or RROC (Tier One operator types)
Ranger Support Battalion (LRRS company, MI company, Sapper company, Rigger company, Training company)

Ranger transpiration ground battalion (trunks, light ground vehicles and Stryker's.
And the Ranger Regiment (2 battalions active 1 reserve, 4 Ranger companies and one Ranger weapons company each)

And if your still here I have a question. I will be getting some of the 28mm Infantry components soon and was wondering how I should paint them? I should I do them up in Muliti-cam? Or should I paint my Cascadian's up differently? If so what would you suggest?

The Southern bounder is relatively secure and peaceful, the occasional Jefferson secessionist attack's being the exception.


The only active component stationed here is the Air Defense Commands 2 F-15 C/D fighter Wings out of Portland airport. (Kingsley Field being closed to save cost)

Makes up the rest of the Defense force troops in DFDS, with the 2nd Mounted Rifles Brigade "The Dragoons"( Reserve Stationed all though out the District.

Third Divsion 3rd Brigade Combined arms( The Triple 3) HQ and it's Combined Arms Heavy battalion are located at Joint Ground-Air Defense base Mountain Home.
Along with a 1 A-10 Fighter Wing, 1 F-15 Strike Eagle Fighter Wing and
The Independent Attack Aviation Battalion along with the Air Defense Corp JATC Forward Air Controller wing.

Fairchild Air Defense Station holds an active Kc-135 Stratotanker, and Reserve C-17.

3rd Brigade 3rd Mounted Rifles Battalion (Stryker)
Is located at Maelstrom joint Air-ground defense Station.
There are also quite a few Cascadian Military Intl troops stationed in around the old radar and now decommissioned missile command facilities.

elements of the Snake River Regiment (reserve) And (The Braves) are also located in DFDE.

The Main mission of ground forces in DRDE is to defended the Eastern Boarder Against Invasion, raids, terrorist or Natural disasters.

Their main threats are forces from the Bonner County militia and Deseret legionnaires.

Some updates on Cascadia

I am going to do some Changes for the military background.
The Navies F18 growler fighter wing, one F18 Hornet Fighter wings and will go to the Air Force.

The C-40 Clipper Squadron will Also got into the Air forces First Logistics command wing.


Leavening the Navy with its helicopters, one F18 Hornet Fighter wing and one F18 growler fighter wing.

The Air force will have its name changed to the Cascadian Air Defense Corp, Army to Cascadian Defense Forces and Navy to Cascadian Maritime Defense Force.
The ADC also Fall's under the CDF as the over all command branch. But it gets its own funding and like how the USMC is separated from the navy.

the ADC strength now stands at.

First Theater command wing.
1 F-15 Strike Eagle Fighter Wing
2 F-15 C/D fighter Wings
1 A-10 Fighter Wing
1 F18 growler fighter wing
1 F18 Hornet Fighter wings

1 F-22 Squadron (being made into a wing once the rest of the planes arrive and pilots complete there training)

Drones are also being fully being used but I honestly don't know much about them so will have to look it what is plausible before I add them to the roster.

1 C-40 Clipper Squadron (used as a more comfortable transport for military in a none tactical environment and often used for diplomatic missions.
2 C-17 Wings (One active/one Reserve)
1 C-130 Air lift Wing

1 P-3 Orion Squadron

The ADC is experimenting with using civilian model or military model transports as drone carriers.

My finally change is that Medical, Supplies, logistics, communication..etc all go to the same school's. So the Logistics Corp members are just as likely to find them self's working on an Airfield, a CDF Camp or a Navy Cutter.
With only the combat and force specific job specialties having their own separate schools.

The CDF and MDF basic training is 8 weeks. This of course is an interdiction to the military and it way of life. The Ground combat school is where all Riflemen, Infantry and Navy infantry learn their trade before going to armor, mech, commando or Ranger training.

Finished my first batch of 7 Russian Fed troops. That is one squad down. and a platoon to go....I want to make two if not 3 honestly but one will do for now.

French Indochina War

A recent order from Age of Glory miniatures came with a surprise gifted fig.
One of the New French Indochina Viet Minh Figures.

I like the little guy and he painted up pretty easy. I still need to figure out a way to do vietnamese skin.
Aide from the obviousness of using them as Viet Minh, I think they will also work for the nationalist forces in 1950s-60s Zubrowka Curry Islands conflict.

Welcome to the Republic Zubrowka

Well I figured I should add some thing to the Blog.
Still having troubling sleeping with out the dog keeping watch, but I guess that is part of morning process.

But I have not been totally idle.

While trying to figure out a way to use my Empress Ultra modern Russians and BMP3 with out using too many real world events as the Bases. And it hit me while watching "The Grand Budapest Hotel". A great movie if you haven't seen it you must.

But back to the subject at had. The Republic of Zubrowka (apparently named after a polish vodka) is the setting for the movie. Its got a nods to a fascist government, conquest by a meaner bigger nation to there north, communist domination of the country liberation and a modern world where what seems a normal (for western Europe that is) Social Democracy is holding sway.

There is a capital city called Lutz. A mix between Vienna, Budapest and Prague so I guess that Zubrowka is a mix of those nations too.

A world famous pastry called Courtesan au Chocolat made by Herr Mendl's pastry.

So its got a little bit of clutter to make it lived in.

So now for the factions.

There is the far right wing party ran by Dmitri und Taxis Grand son, who also shares his name, looks, and bad attitude.

Comprised of the usually mix of football hooligans, bully boys, Thugs, angry young men and pissed off old men. All who think Zubrowka would be better with all the things those type always seem to cling too.

The Zubrowka social Peoples party are the raiment's of the old communist government, just kinder, gentler, with out secret police and political prisons. They spend their time striking for equality, striking for better wages, striking for more pay, striking for more vacation time, striking protest the existence of the Zubrowka's Rights party.
